How much should I expect to spend on a 2 carat diamond of decent/good quality?

I’m going ring shopping this weekend and wanted to know what a good diamond size is for a size 4 finger. My girlfriend wants a solitaire ring with a round-cut diamond. We looked at a few already, and 1 carat seemed awfully large….she thought it looked to gaudy. I’m leaning toward .5 – .75. Would that be a good size, or look too small?

I know you have to consider the 4 C’s….Carat weight, cut, colour, clairity. My daughter wants to know just an average price range….of course not a crappy diamond but a decent one.
